Hand-Mulled Watercolour Half Pans (15×20×10mm) – Traditional Artist Paint, Made in Cornwall
JustGoSketching
These hand-mulled half pans are made to complement my sketching boxes, palettes, and traditional travel tins.
Each paint is made using a traditional hand-mulling process and my own unique binder recipe, producing watercolours that are designed for traditional use—the kind that rewards patience, layering, and craft. Made in Cornwall, a place known for its extraordinary light, these paints are created to help you build depth, atmosphere, and luminous washes over time.
These are not “one-stroke” opaque paints. If you’re looking for extremely heavy, instant coverage, I recommend gouache or acrylic instead. My paints are for artists who want to work in a more time-honoured way, with the ability to glaze and build layers—following in the footsteps of classic watercolourists like Turner.
The half pan itself measures 15 × 20 × 10 mm, making it the perfect compact format for travel and sketching kits.
I source pigments mainly from a specialist London colourist established in 1881, known for quality and consistency, trusted by artists such as Francis Bacon and Damien Hirst.
My priority is for you to enjoy your materials and enjoy your painting. These watercolours are transparent or semi-transparent (coverage is shown on the swatch), contain no fillers or brighteners, and should always be allowed to dry fully before storage to avoid spills.

FAQ's
Q: What does “hand-mulled” mean?
A: Hand-mulled watercolour is made using a traditional process where pigment is carefully ground into a binder by hand. This creates a paint with a handmade character, strong performance, and beautiful layering potential.
Q: What size are the half pans?
A: Each plastic half pan measures approximately 15 × 20 × 10 mm, designed to fit sketching boxes, travel tins, and palettes.
Q: Are these paints designed for travel and sketching?
A: Yes — they are made specifically with sketching in mind, but they also work beautifully for finishing studio pieces.
Q: Are these paints super opaque and bold in one stroke?
A: These paints are designed for traditional watercolour techniques, meaning they perform best when built up in layers and glazes. If you want heavy, instant coverage in one stroke, gouache or acrylic may be a better choice.
Q: Are your watercolours transparent?
A: Yes — they are transparent or semi-transparent, and the level of coverage is indicated on the swatch.
Q: Do your paints contain fillers or brighteners?
A: No. These paints contain no fillers and no brighteners.
Q: Where are your paints made?
A: They are handmade in Cornwall, a place known for its special light and atmospheric landscapes—perfect inspiration for traditional watercolour work.
Q: Where do you source your pigments from?
A: Pigments are sourced mainly from a specialist London colourist established in 1881, known for high quality and trusted by many professional artists.
Q: Do you provide lightfastness ratings?
A: I don’t display lightfastness ratings. In general, all watercolours should be kept away from strong light sources to help preserve your artwork over time.
Q: Are these paints safe?
A: These are artist materials and should be used responsibly. They should not be ingested, and hands should be washed after use—especially before eating or touching your face.
Q: How should I store the paints in a tin or palette?
A: Always allow your paints to dry fully before closing your tin or palette to avoid mess or spills during storage and travel.
Q: Are these paints good for beginners?
A: Yes — especially for beginners who want to learn proper traditional watercolour layering, rather than relying on heavy opaque coverage.
Q: What style of painting are these best suited to?
A: These paints are best for artists who love a time-honoured, traditional approach—building depth, atmosphere, and subtle colour shifts through layering, like classic watercolourists such as Turner.
