Collection: Hand mulled paints
I offer half-sized pans that complement my sketching boxes, palettes, and traditional travel tins. Each pan includes a flat magnet that you can attach to a metal tin. The plastic half pan has a capacity of 2ml and measures 15 x 20 x 10 mm.
My watercolors are mulled and prepared by hand using an age-old traditional process. I use my own binder recipe, which includes Gum Arabic, organic Cornish honey, glycerine, clove oil, and synthetic Ox gall. Each colour is created differently due to its unique characteristics. I make these paints in Cornwall, a location that has attracted artists for centuries due to its special lighting.
As an artist with over 40 years of experience, I create paints that are designed to be used traditionally. They enable layers to be built up to create depth and atmosphere. However, if you're looking for highly pigmented colors to use with one stroke, I would suggest gouache or acrylic instead. These paints are perfect if you want to work in a rewarding and time-honoured way, following in the footsteps of great watercolourists like Turner. The swatch shows a 3-pass application with heavily diluted pigment.
I designed these paints with sketching in mind, but they can also be used in the studio for finishing off many paintings. The pigments I use are from a small traditional colorist based in London since 1881. It's one of the finest shops for artists, with creaky floorboards and a huge range of supplies. They have supplied a wide range of artists, both past and present, from Francis Bacon to Damien Hirst. I can always rely on the high and consistent quality of their pigments.
I do not display lightfastness as the pigments I use are of high quality and stable. Lightfastness can give a false sense of security as all watercolours should be kept away from strong sustained light sources. However, I believe you should enjoy your work as the number one priority. All my watercolors are transparent or semi-transparent, and this is shown on the swatch with a black line to indicate the coverage.
My paints have no fillers or bulking agents, no brighteners, and should not be ingested. Allow the paints to dry before putting them away to avoid any spillage.
